Edasseri Govindan Nair was one of the major poets and playwrights of Malayalam literature. He was born on December 23, 1906 in Kuttippuram, a village in Malappuram district of Kerala. Early Life and Career
Edasseri Govindan Nair was born to P. Krishna Kurup and Edasseri Kunjukutti Amma in a poor Nair family. His father was a farmer and his mother was a housewife. He had two brothers and two sisters. He attended the local school until the fifth grade, but had to drop out due to his father's death in 1921. He then moved to Alappuzha with a relative who worked as a clerk. He helped him with his work and also learned typing and accounting. He also developed an interest in literature and read books from the local library. He learned Sanskrit from a friend and English from another relative. He also wrote poems and stories for magazines.
In 1930, he moved to Kozhikode and worked as a clerk in a timber company. He continued his literary pursuits and joined various forums and associations. He also met many prominent writers and critics of Malayalam literature such as Vallathol Narayana Menon, Ulloor S. Parameswara Iyer, Kesari Balakrishna Pillai, Muloor S.Padmanabha Panicker, G.Sankara Kurup, Changampuzha Krishna Pillai, Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai and others. He published his first book of poems, Alakavali, in 1940.
In 1938, he married Janaki Amma, a relative of his friend. They had four children: two sons and two daughters. One of his sons, E.Harikumar, became a writer and journalist. In 1947, he moved to Ponani, where he worked as an accountant in a co-operative society. He also founded a library named after his friend Krishna Panikkar. He became involved in various cultural and literary activities in Ponani and nearby areas.
